Remembering Dave Mungenast Sr.

Things You Didn't Know about Dave Mungenast Sr.

Aside from Dave Mungenast Sr.’s extensive knowledge of motorcycles and automobiles, he earned a cartography degree, which is the practice of drawing maps, at St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri. After college, he became a member of the US Army Special Forces from 1954 to 1957 where he was picked for the 8th Army Honor Guard. He then traded in his military uniform and appeared as a stuntman in seven major motion pictures, including being nominated for “Stuntman of the Year” for the motorcycle jump in “Paradise Lost” which was filmed in New Zealand as a pilot for a feature film. He also was the double for Gene Hackman in the very popular movie “Airport 77.”

After Dave’s time in the military and in movies, his St. Louis Honda dealership was franchised by Honda Motor Company to sell Honda Automobiles at 5939 S. Lindbergh in April 1964. Between 1961 and 1965, he was at the leading edge of the import motorcycle entry into the US market being the manager of Bob Schultz Imported Motorcycles in St. Louis. While working, he competed internationally in 9 consecutive 6-day trial, off road competitions, and earned two gold, two silver and two bronze medals. In 1964 and 1966, he was the over-all winner of the 24-hour Endurance Race at Riverdale Speedway in Jefferson County, Missouri, earning Honda its first national championship in America. After all his stuntman and racing days, Dave returned to St. Louis and opened St. Louis Honda Motorcycles at 6820 Gravois in March 1965.

Dave became a member of the AIDA dealer delegation that travelled to Japan with the State Department to negotiate Automotive Trade issues with Japan in the 1970’s. Later, he became chairman of the AIDA’s National Trade organization of International Nameplate US Auto Dealers. While apart of the AIDA and into the 80’s, Dave established Doe Run Cycle Park in St. François County Missouri, which consisted of 1700 acres, a.k.a. motorcycle play land. In 1979, he was part of the Budweiser Rocket Car team, which he helped the driver, and his friend, Stan Barrett, land the speed record at the competition. In 1987, he was nominated to the board of the Boys’ Club of St. Louis and served for the remainder of his life.

In 1991, Dave was named the “Time Quality Dealer” by Time Magazine, and then in 1998, he added the full- service auto body shop, Mungenast Collision Center, to the automotive companies. He was inducted into the American Motorcycle Association Hall of Fame in January 2000.
